Acibadem Atakent Hospital Gynecology Specialist Prof. Dr. Fatih Şendağ, explained that laparoscopy and robotic operations are preferred by women in particular because they enable them to return to work sooner. Commenting that the working and young section, comprising a significant portion of the population, frowns upon the idea of long hospital stays. Prof. Dr. Fatih Şendağ added, “Since open surgeries require a longer stay in the hospital they think there might be a risk in the ailment being heard about in their work community; whereas there are some special situations that women do not feel like sharing with everyone. When procedures for such ailments as uterine myoma, ovarian cysts, sagging of the bladder and sagging of the uterus, removal of the uterus, are done by closed methods, patients can heal quickly and return to work”.

Prof. Dr. Fatih Şendağ, who explained that they encounter two types of patients in their profession, said the first type is the patient who keeps up with the latest medical developments and asks questions and the other type learns about these developments from the doctor. Pointing out that some patients are not aware of operations that can be done by closed and robotic methods, Prof. Dr. Fatih Şendağ provided the following information:
“Whether our patients are married or single they want to return to their social lives and their work as soon as possible. Usually they even want to avoid a doctor’s report and ask if they can just take a little of their weekly or yearly leave to take care of a medical problem. Married women with children experience both the pressure of returning to work quickly and worrying about giving enough attention to their kids. Sometimes women who undergo an operation and have a long recovery time worry about losing their job. We have encountered all kinds of cases in our clinical experience. But it is not sufficient just for the patient to prefer the closed method or robotic surgery. It is vital to decide which method is right for which patient in the most accurate way. Sometimes patients come to us who are more suitable for open surgery than closed or robotic surgery. Doctors have to make the most accurate decision at this point.”
ABLE TO MAKE 540-DEGREE MANEUVERS IN ROBOTIC SURGERY
In recent years robotic surgery has become a current issue as much as laparoscopy in the field of gynecology. Dr. Fath Şendağ pointed out that it is possible to make 540-degree maneuvers with the robotic surgery robot and make a number of movements that are impossible with the human hand, and said that this type of surgery is especially successful in patients with excessive fat tissue and classified as morbidly obese. Explaining that most doctors are hesitant to operate on morbidly obese patients because there are a lot of risks involved in open operations for such patients, Prof. Dr. Fatih Şendağ added, “The most important problem here is fatty tissue. Operating on a morbidly obese patient of 160 kilos with around 30 cm of fatty tissue with the classic operating method can generate a number of different problems. The incisions of the patient take a long time to heal, the stitches may come out and infections may develop. But if the conditions of the patient’s health is suitable, robotic surgery can be a lot more comfortable.” Explaining that the maneuvering capability of the robot can make a lot of movements that the human hand cannot, making it more comfortable to operate on obese patients, Prof. Dr. Fatih Şendağ said that applications are done in the field of surgery using some special tools in laparoscopy or robotic surgery on patients with high fat mass and that the side effects following surgery are less compared to the classic operation methods.
